It's time to let her go.
87 5ktq that I've owned since 1988 (odometer showed 4K miles). Now it
shows 172K miles. pearl white with black leather. This has been my daily
driver since 1988, always garaged.
The good: solid body (under and over) and clean interior. That Audi
leather is amazing. Strong engine (except one lifter that settles down
after a few minutes) with no vacuum leaks (strong turbo) and quiet smooth
tranny. Always changed oil every 3K and have run full synthetic for last
72K miles. Original SS exhaust is still solid after all these Iowa
winters. Most everything works including power windows, seats and memory,
seat heaters (except drivers), locks, sunroof, trip computer, etc. Last 2
years I have replaced the radiator and hoses, replaced ISV valve and
controller board, timing belt and waterpump (this summer), new rear
calipers and rotors, sunroof mechanism, auxiliary water pump for turbo,
"michelin man hose", front CV boots, A/C programmer. Steering rack
replaced several years ago - still leak free. A/C still blowing cold on the
original factory charge (well, actually the fresh air blower needs
brushes), as hard as that is to believe!
What it needs: Right front CV just started clicking on turns, fresh air
blower (4 years old) needs brushes (bearing is fine), hydraulic pump has a
slow leak and hoses should be changed too, needs rear shocks, parking brake
cable. Suspension bushings are original, along with tie rods,
etc. Original Audi radio/cassette (Blaupunkt) is getting flakey and the
power antenna is now manual. Original heater core but no leaks, yet. ABS
turns off occassionally (but it turns right back on when you cycle the
switch). Headlight dimmer switch is wedged so it won't fall into
brights. The previous owner scraped up the passenger side, and the sheet
metal was replaced with audi parts. Paint there is showing lots of rock
nicks, unlike the driver side. All in all, still a pretty good looker and
driver.
Is it worth $1500 to anyone? Or?
Kelly
