89 200 tq bad fan burnt wires - help

My '87 5000 did the same exact thing. The fuel pump would run if the
battery was conected, and random lights came on the dash. The problems are
due to shorting. Here is what my car needed in order to fix the
resulting problems:
-new resistor pack that is located in front of the radiator, bolted to the
frame rail. One of the wires from the radiator fan runs to it. You can
check that your's is Ok by measuring the resistance between the 3
terminals as specified by Bentley. Don't have those manuals here, but I
can check at home if you would like.
-wiring to the fan. one wire to resistor, one to ground near the fan, and
one to a location under the dash. They are easy to trace because they are
larger guage then other wires.
-fan 3rd stage relay (melted)
-I got the whole wiring harness from a wrecking yard and checked the
length of the the radiator fan wires to see where the insulation has
melted together with other wires, and also replaced those wires. This
required cutting open the black heat shrink that keeps all those wires
together as they make their way to the dash. On my car I traced melted
insulation all the way up to the fuse box, and that's where they shorted
with fuel pump relay wiring.

Took a little soldering, and a day of work, but didn't have any more
problems. As a side note, my 90 200 has a fuse link on one of those rad.
fan wires, mounted on the strut tower. Obviously audi noted that NOT
providing a fuse for the fan, and counting on the relays to fry instead
might not be a good idea.

If you need more help, I'd be glad to provide it, but respond to
marcinsteg at aol.com, as I cannot check this mail when I am home,

I've got the rad out to replace the fan and get to the wires easly that I know are affected. The car has two other problems I assume due to electrical shorting but not verified yet. With the engine relay in, the fuel pump will run continusly even with the key turned off and the brake lights are all ways on , again even with the key off.
