4kq gear whine

Hi All,

I'm driving with the windows open now, finally, and I've been hearing a fair
amount of gear whine which is _not_ coming from the rear diff. The PO
(Sprongl) said the car had synthetic gear and diff oil, Mobil if memory
serves. Car shifts fine. Can't see any leaks. I can hear it through the
tranny tunnel. It _seems_ to be from the right side of the car, but not
willing to bet on that.

I'm wondering if
1) my gearbox is about to explode,
2) all I need to do is put in a bit thicker gear oil like Redline MT-90,
3) there are any other likely causes of the gear whine.
