Strange popping noise in steering

Picked my '92 100S up from the mechanic last night (just had state inspecti=
on and emissions done), and today I notice an odd noise in the steering tha=
t was not there before. When I start to turn the steering wheel countercloc=
kwise from center, there is a loud popping noise in the engine bay from und=
er the master cylinder. The noise is not present when turning the wheel clo=
ckwise. Any ideas on what this may be? Steering rack? TIA.
