here's a rundown on how the power mirrors work, within the limits of my
senility...

the little joystick thing closes the same pair of circuits in the up
position as the left (I may have this sorta backwards, but it is the
principle that matters) and same pair backwards from that in the down
and right positions.

in the up and down positions, however, it also closes another circuit
which operates a solenoid in each mirror (you hear it clicking),
changing the motor action from left/right to up/down.

in the coupe/4k, there is only one solenoid circuit, and it always runs
both mirrors' solenoids. the type 44 uses two separate solenoid
circuits and does not do this.

the left/right (mirror) switch only alters which mirror the pair of
energized left/right/up/down connections are sent to.

Those switches suck, and are in a very vulnerable place, below the
window. They are also hard to dismantle and clean, though I guess some
are reporting success.

You can also have problems with broken wires in the door jamb(s), which
further complicates the issue...

your bentley will help a lot with this problem, why not just wait til it
arrives to really dig in?

and here:

this is a schematic of the *internal* layout of the typical late 80's
Audi underhood fusebox. so the fuses and relay are shown fairly
clearly. prints reasonably well on a legal size sheet of paper, nice
resource for troubleshooting.
