NAC: Possessed Sunroof in a 98 Passat

Hey All,

    Sorry for asking a non Audi question, but maybe someone out there
has had this happened to them.  This is a co-workers car.  As stated,
1998 Passat, 1.8t, 2 wheel drive.

    The sunroof mysteriously opens and closes on a whim while driving
and at a stop.  Like it has a mind of it's own!  There seems not to be a
pattern as to when or the conditions when this opens, closes or pops
up.  This has happened since she has owned it.  She tells me that it
didn't matter where (ie freeways or streets) or temperature during
operation.  The only consistant to me is the usage of the sunroof.
    Now, she hasn't operated the sunroof in 2 weeks.  A week n half ago
it opened by itself while driving on a residential street, two inches
with the dial at closed.  Some how she got it to close, but it went to
vent (pop up mode) and then she finally got it closed.  Not sure how,
but she got it shut.  I am not familiar enough with the newer cars to
help.  She is very frustrated with the roof and is concerned that this
may happen during a downpour this winter.  She'd like to avoid the
potential mobil shower.  Also, there is no warranty, she bought from the
original owner, father's friend.

    I am turning to the very knowledgeable Collective for information.
