Another 1 bites the dust; Was: Bosch fuel pump death

Aww.... very sorry to hear that, Jim. Whose turn will it be next Friday
night?!

I worked on mine again today. I _did_ find lots of flaking crud floating
in the very bottom of the tank. You couldn't see it till the pump was
out; it all accumulated in the well below the tank pickup. Got that junk
out, at least, whatever it was.

I did the fuel delivery rate test as outlined in the Bentley on 20.21
(wish I'd read that before I took the pump out!). You disconnect the
fuel return line under the hood and measure the flow while running the
pump off the battery. If your pump is still running, this is an
excellent way to drain your tank too!

Data below are with the Czech 2.5-year old pump that seemed to strand me
last Friday:

With screen	1040		10.8		9.3
Without screen	1040		11.1		9.4

Pretty exciting, huh? Bentley says the minimum rate at 11V is ~600
mL/30s, so we're well above that. I was disappointed, however, that
there was no real difference with the screen off. Also the sound level
has not changed. Rats.

Could it have not been the fuel pump that caused the breakdown? This
test doesn't have a pressure load like real use does...
