Noise from shock absorbers?

I have a strange noise in my car. When I start the car after it has
been sitting for a while, the rear suspension will clunk in every
little bump, but the noise will disappear in less than a mile.

The car has got about 130k miles on the original shock absorbers, and
I think the noise might come from them, as they will "tighten up" when
they get used and then be quiet.

Anybody believe this theory? :-) I don't know what else could make a
noise like that when cold and then be quiet..

BTW, the car in question is a '94 S4.
