I have had the same code in my 90q and had the exact same symptoms.
It is either your knock or oxygen sensor. I had this problem as well a few
months ago. It is more likely a knock sensor since it would retard the
timing if it sensed knocking. A bad or dead sensor will send errant
readings to the ECU, which well then retard the timing as a safety. Check
the resistance on your O2 sensor, it is easy and the specs are in the
Bentley. I forget how to check the knock sensor, but I think it is in the
Bentley too. I replaced the knock sensor because I also had pulled a knock
sensor code. Like I told huw earlier, I fixed all these and it made a major
difference. HTH
