1.8T vs 2.8 V6

I think it may also be the previous owner's driving habits affecting the
transmission computer. Didn't the '99 have an "adaptive" transmission
computer.

I drove a V6 Passat that did the same thing. Sitting at a stop light,
light turns green, off the brake and on the gas, and the car paused for
a brief moment before taking off. The car belongs to my wife's brother's
wife, and I don't think she is as much of a lead foot as I am, so I'm
willing to bet the transmission computer is more used to her driving
style than mine.

OR I could be way off and a simple chip upgrade would take care of the
slight pause.

Either way, the Tiptronic behind the 1.8T in the A4 is NOT known for
it's durability, especially with significant modifications to the
engine. I would think it would hold up to a Stage1 mod, but nothing
above that.
