is that 16bit or 16 colors? usually the next step from 16 colors is 256 colors then 16bit 24 bit etc. if you cant select something higher than 256 colors you probably do not have the proper drivers for your video card installed and its running the default windows drivers. did the laptop come with a cd with drivers on it? if not you should be able to download them.

Have you checked that you use the correct display resolution? If you
use a lower resolution than the LCD panel is designed for, most
computers will "stretch" the display, a process that makes the picture
appear dull and unfocused..
