Q1 - Can somebody explain me how works VAG cooling system, compared to a
conventional unit with an un-pressurized overflow tank?

Q2 - Where can I find the original in-line flow-tru rad fan switch (the
one below the tank for high-speed fan)?

Last year, I replaced both switches ( 2 prong bottom of rad + 2 prong
overflow hose) with a 3-prong unit (the only one found at dealer or
elsewhere) on bottom of rad.  Now this switch is bad, on the low speed
circuit only.  I checked my old BEHR 2 prong unit I removed from the car
and it is good.

Q3 - Could the newer switch not sturdy enough for our type of electrical
circuit?

Q4 - When one should replace the expansion tank?
