I had the same problem on V8Q #2. It was very obvious after the first
snowfall, the area around the 3rd brake light was the only part of the
car that was snow-free, a nice little clean "force field" around the
light.
In my case it was a very intermittent problem with the trunk switch,
quickest, easiest and lowest tech way of checking it is to pop open the
trunk every now and then (whether you're driving around or not), and
putting your finger on the lamp to check for heat. A quick tap is enough
to tell if the lamps been on for a while.
That reminds me....I should be putting another switch in there to replace
the one I removed.
