Well, when they get overheated. And if the brakes are insufficient
for the car, well, you're asking for trouble slapping rotors on that
have less thermal mass and don't like getting overheated :-) They're
just a waste of money and Yet Another Thing To Worry About for 99.9%
of people out there.
As for the rotors on your car, Greg...I agree- runout is easily
checked, they mount a touch-micrometer to the car, and spin the
rotor; there's a limit for how much runout is permissible.
Kent's point about heating up the rotors is a good one, that trick
sometimes works; just do 2-3 stops from moderate(45+) speed, make 'em
quick, hard, and in rapid succession- just do it somewhere safe+legal
please :-)
Andrew's point about it being a well-known issue is also a good one;
you might be able to talk the dealer into replacing the rotors if
they are worn.
Aftermarket solid rotors are a possibility, but it's a crapshoot;
might be better, might be worse. Even the big names sometimes can't
be trusted; I've heard from one person who found his Brembo rotors to
not be up to par with the name.
