Brett,

The one thing you neglected to do is try cooling the MC
when the wheels were all locked. If you cooled it (I'd say
a little snow would work, it would be no more shocking than
a bucket of water and it could be a little easier to control,
i.e. less frozen parts afterwards, than water. Remember, although
the snow is cold, it's also mostly air, so not a whole lot of
thermal mass) and the wheels released, then I'd say you've
pretty well pinpointed the MC. Also, air in the lines could be
caused by the MC leaking past it's seals.
