Or the coil is no longer making spark pulses, since that is what drives
the tach on these older Audis, usually. Or there is a discontinuity in
the wire betweent he coil and the tach. It's the only three colored
wire that I can think of on the cars (R/BK/Y).
A discontinuity would just make the tach die, though, not the engine as
well.
