I think it would be easier to use the drive train from a VW Vanagon
Syncro. It has a beefy tranny w/ diff lock and front diff (can be
adapted to diff lock) all made to go forward with a rear engine. Adapter
plates are available from Kennedy Enginnereing to install a number of
different engines, including Audis, Porsche flat 6 and Subarus.
