discharges as you describe, it generally requires more than just a jump
start. I tend to put a trickle charge on all my vehicles periodically, and
your battery undoubtedly needs a good overnight charge. That is assuming
the battery is still good. I have seen them fail in under a year, but it is
rare. The periodic trickle charge will help maintain them longer, and I
have kept some batteries doing their business for almost ten years before
needing replacement(this is rare too).
A good long charge after letting it rundown with the radio or left the
lights on can actually be somewhat of a good thing, as it improves the
"memory" of the battery, helping it to retain its capacity. But I think it
is just best to routinely giver them an overnight charge. You will
typically see them go from drawing over 2 AMPS as they start to charge.
If the battery continues to require a significant draw off the charger, like
it never stops charging below 1 AMP, or keeps going dead, then it may need
replacement.
You may have a discharge happening when the car is off. You can find out by
removing ground terminal and see if you are getting a small spark,
repetitively - the car will usually create a small spark once due to the
overall capcitance of the vehicles wiring, etc.
Or, your alternator may be going. I doubt it's your starter if a fully
charged battery starts the car.
Hope this helps,
Ben
[I'm writing this as I'm staring out of the window at work waiting for my
son
to come and jump my 84ksq. Left work yesterday afternoon, hooped in the
Quattro, turned the key and got the infamous click..click without the
starter
turning the engine over. Got a jump, got the car started on the first turn
of
the key, and drove home (half-hour on the highway). Car started this morning
with a single click before turning over. Put in a very long day, got into
the
car, turned the key..click..click..click...nada! Battery is less than a
year
old. Car has a re-built Bosch starter from Autozone, and I just replaced
the
ignition switch a few months ago. By the way, the lights, horn, windows,
etc
all work fine...any ideas? TIA
Regards,
George B.]
