A4 Check engine light

I am sure you have seen this before, if so please forward the emails with the solutions.

I am getting:
error codes p1557 (audi 17965)
                   p1136 (audi 17544)
on my '97 A4tqm. I am in the process of ordering the Bentley, but until then I would appreciate any help I can get.

First, can you reset the CEL without a OBDC reader? If so, how?

I did some research on these errors and most people are saying it is the MAF sensor. The car has less than 40k on it, is it typical for the sensor to go during this time?

What other possible solutions could there be if it isn't the MAF?
