Well, not from the "steering column," but from the bracket on the end of
the rack, yes.  According to the Bentley, and experience, this is
necessary to get enough clearance to pull the tranny out.  Although... I
was watching Sean do a 90Q clutch next door (grrrr, with the tranny jack
Nate and I couldn't figure out when we did my 87.5 cgt!), and he left
them on and just *really* pushed up on the front of the engine to get
clearance.
