Heater hose breach in what looks to be accessory access nipple Audi 95 90 sport q

Greetings all,

Sorry I only say hello when something bad happens.  This is kind of a no
brainier but am curious about why it happened.

Yesterday a pin hole opened up in what looks to be an access nipple on the
center heater hose just as it comes to the firewall.  The hole is in the top
of the elbow where there is an indent.  Was this indent intended for some
kind access to heated coolant.  I can't imagine what for at that location or
is it just a silly Audi design.  The hose thickness is clearly thinner at
this point.

I really don't want to deal with replacing the whole hose at the very
moment.  With rains from Isabel im not thrilled with dealing with it in next
day or two.  I taped it on the way home yesterday and intend to pass a small
bolt backed up with rubber washer as a fix for a week or two.

How much of a pain is it to replace this hose.  Of course being the V6 motor
im sure its cramped and time consuming task.
