97A6Q wont give me the key

Frank,

I've had the same problem with my '96 A6. I know that the key is not
supposed to release unless the transmission is in park (*there is a
mechanism that links to the ignition*). At the same time I was having a lot
of trouble with the car not releasing my key, I also was having trouble with
the return spring not working correctly, so the key wouldn't fall back to
the run position, but would rather sit at the crank position. After having
the return spring replaced it seems much better. Of course, at the time you
are removing the ignition switch to do any work on it, you might just
consider replacing the ignition switch all together. The mid 90's A6s are
notorious for bad ignition switches. My mother in law has a 97 A6 and has
had to have the switch replaced at least twice.

Subject: 97A6Q wont give me the key

Hello all,

My audi has started to refuse to give me my key back. I Have tried
wiggling and juggling the steering but it doesn't want to give me back the
key all the time. I usually have to repark the car upto 5-6 times before it
gives me the key back. Any Ideas to what the problem may be? What would it
take to fix the problem other than a new car?

Thanks

Frank
