now that you mention it being a FIA rally NOT WRC, I do remember that. 
guess what I was thinking of it being the "wrc type" rally cars.  it was 
quite a rally!  enjoyed those cars flying down the streets of Aberdeen on 
the spectator stage, at night.  spent most of my time spectating out on the 
logging roads west of Tumwater
