I have a bit of experiences with them - I've been swearing at (and driving
too) them for a dozen years or so.
First thing to check for is 12V at the stop solonoid in the pump - if you
disconnect the wire with the key on, you should hear a distinct click from
the solonoid, and see a small spark as you connect the wire. No click
means a stuck plunger or no juice. Check for 12V with a multimeter.
If your glowplugs aren't operating reliably, the car engine should still
start with ether (shudder - don't make a habit out of it!) down to about
0degrees C, but it still has to crank over at 250rpm or better. This
takes a good battery, good connections, and a good starter. If cranking
speed is too slow the engine won't start easily or at all.
If it's below freezing then water in the fuel tank or fuel filter may have
frozen, which would prevent fuel from reaching the pump.
Mice may also have chewed up your air filter and built a nest out of it in
the intake manifold (do NOT laugh - happened to a friend of mine - it was
a mystifying no start situation.)
If you want to email me off-list with more details I'll be happy to help.
Drew
