If you're unlucky, the chunks will reform as an obstruction in the pipes or
mufflers, and result in a distinct loss of power, worsening with throttle
opening. The cat has suffered a meltdown, most often from running too rich,
but also from old age. You really should replace it5, despite the lack of
emissions testing in your area. HTH, John
"My 1987.5 CGT started puking out bits of catalitic converter matrix out the
tail pipe. Pretty large chunks at that. No clue why, I haven't hit anything.
Will having a "bad" cat cause any real problems? I would think not, and that
all it could do is give me a pony or two from being freeer flowing, but I've
never had a cat self destruct before... They don't do smog testing here, so
that's not a worry, but I don't want it to cause any damage... Thoughts?"
