t44 speaker BTDTs

I replaced only the door woofers (5.25") and hid them under the stock
grills. The surrounds had sagged enough so that the voice coils were
rubbing. My system sounds fine with only the door woofers replaced. I have
a 4x50 Sony amp mounted in the trunk with 18ga wire run to the front.  I
was able to separate the grills from the speaker using a screwdriver to
pry the glue apart and mount the woofers from the back. The depth is
limited so be sure to measure with the speaker out and the door panel
mounted before you shop. You could get much more depth mounting from the
outside using aftermarket grills and spacers if needed. You will need
longer machine screws and lock nuts even if you use the original grills.

My head unit is an Eclipse in-dash LCD (where the climate control was) and
Power Acoustic DVD/TV (where the radio was). I relocated the climate
control to the bottom slot (where the diff lock was) and mounted the diff
lock switch and 2 LEDs to the left side of the climate control. Nice of
Audi to give us 3 DIN slots to play with. I'll post pics when I get a
chance. My wife seems to forget that its an old car when the DVD is
playing.
