More than likely, you heard the auxiliary fan which runs when the AC is turned
on. 1 of 2 things was happening there; either the fan bearings are going bad
or there is a piece of trim lodged in the fan which creates stress on the motor
and you get the "air raid siren" sound.
It's a pain in the ass, really, and all V6 equipped A6s seems to be subject to
the condition.
