Side airbag activation?

I'm about ready to scrap this 2002 S6, however one of the side curtain airbags will be left in the shell as it was pinched when the roof caved in. I recall reading in the bently how to active an airbag using a 9 volt battery, hoever I have tried this method with this particular airbag and it didn't activate. Any problems with leaving it in when the car gets shredded?
