01E or 016 to V8 ?

Denis,
The 3.6L V8 does not have that much power and torque.
If you are just installing a 3.6L V8 then either the 016 or 01E transmission
will work fine. If you are satisfied using a 5 speed, then the 016 is much
less expensive and much more common in junk yards.
The 01E mainshaft splines are different, and will require you to use a different
clutch disk, a different pressure plate, and maybe a different flywheel. The 016
should bolt up directly to a 3.6L V8 that is using flywheel and clutch parts from
a 1991 5 speed V8 Quattro.
You are probably aware, the 1991 5 speed V8 Quattro that was imported into North
America used a 016 5 speed gearbox. All cars with the engine in the fore and aft
position with a 6 speed use only an 01E gearbox; this includes V8s, UrS4/S6, S2,
RS2, RS4, all 2.7L V6 twin turbo.
Use of an 01E will require that you use an 01E type shift lever and base mounted
in the console - because of the differences in reverse lockout position. Other
than that, the shift linkages are essentially the same.
