oil weights

My 2000 A6Q calls for 5W-40 oil year round. But 5W-40 is getting
damn near impossible to find now. It does claim that 5W-30 can be
used as a possible substitute, but given the warm weather of summer
just around the corner, might I be better off with 10W-40 instead?

Shell has 5w-40 in their Rotella Synthetic, full synthetic, for diesel/gas 
engines. I've been using it in the 1.8t. Mobil 1 has 0W-40 which Audi now 
recommends for the 1.8t now that there is a sludge issue with that engine.
