The first pumps of this newer anchoring design were the same OD, I think,
as the one that used the rubberish type of retainer, while the newer pumps
are of a smaller OD and require an intermediate sleeve that fits into the
retainer of the original "newer" design to take up the slack. If the pump
you removed was "loose" in its retainer, you probably lack the
intermediate sleeve. If you examine the photos in the write-up on Chris

differences and the part you need to make for a solid retention of the
pump. If you got the basket out without the tool, you probably will be
able to reinstall it without the tool. I've needed the tool to remove two
fuel pumps, but could put them back in without the tool. Some folks have
reported a gloved hand helped them remove/reinstall without the tool.
