I saw the FRAM drain thingy at my local FLAPS
yesterday. It was about $10 I believe.

On the Porsche engineering, one of the front engined
Porsche's (it's been 10 years) has a design with the
upside-down filter. However, it was mounted high on
the engine right above the alternator. Of course, it
isn't the best idea to get oil on the alt, so I built
a sheet-metal tray to divert the oil when it drained.
What a design. My only complaint in all the Audi's and
VW's I've worked on are on the V8's. The plug is
pretty big, so if you have an oil that holds oil
inside, it comes out so fast that is splashes ALL over
the place. Fun!!!!!!
