The way we used to do it on 911s and 914s at the shop is for removal use 
lots of heat, and a large socket that is big enough to not slide through the 
center, and a BFH. For re-installation we would freeze the hub and bearing 
over night or at least for a long period of time, then heat the housing and 
the bearing just slides in by hand easy as pie. Then let the bearing match 
temperature with the housing (dont heat it, just let the heat soak into it) 
and slide the frozen hub in. If you dont heat/freeze enoughyou may need to 
tap them in a bit.

We did have a press, but on those cars if you remove the swingarm (it holds 
the bearing and hub in the rear, the front is a strut) you have to do the 
alignment afterwards, and we didn't have a rack.
