Sorry to hear of your (continuing) troubles.

I agree about the early 1990s 100 series -- same seats,
reliable V6, decent gas mileage, and in a FWD version
decent performance.  My '94 100 S Avant wagon cost me
$2800, but required me to splice a new ECU connector
into the wiring loom.  Still, it has been much more
reliable than my '89 200 TQ (though not as much fun).

But I've been in a position where I didn't have two
nickels to rub together. Since your Hubby is willing to
swap engines, sweet talk him into removing the head,
having a local machine shop mill it flat, and putting
it back on. The machine work, a new gasket, thermostat,
and antifreeze may be your cheapest way out of it.
