autocrossing type 89's

Generally, Hoosiers do not do well on cars that have large camber
changes (i.e. Older Audis, NOT new Minis). You are better off with the
Kumho's.
Also consider adding (contrary to popular opinion) a stiffer front
sway bar and bushings, because old VAG products will benefit from
ANYTHING that will limit
roll camber change. This is legal by SCCA stock rules. And generally,
the reduced roll will help alieviate some of the inherit push of these
cars because the front tires will actually be at a better camber angle
to actually work (i.e. you won't be cornering on your outside
sidewalls).
Other than that, gas up, buy a legal helmet (probably at this point,
Snell 2000, although if you plan to keep up with it, I'd seriously
consider Snell 2005 when (or did they already) they come out. If
you're thinking track at all, consider an SA rated helmet, a decent,
relatively inexpensive open face (hey, you're in a sedan, it's okay!)
SA helmet is the Bell Mag 5.
Have fun!
