There are probably better industrial engines available
but there were a lot of small diesel engines used in
cars in the early eighties.
The vw diesel engine was used in the Rabbit, Jetta,
Quantum, Rabbit Pick-up, Vanagon, Audi 4000 (was even
a few 4000 turbo diesels) and I have even seen it in a
commercial lawn mower. Picture walked into your local
VW dealership and there is a big lawn mower in the
service bay.
Isuzu sold the Imark thru about 1984 with a 1.8L
diesel engine and they had a 2.2L diesel in their
pick-up. The Chevy Chevette had a 1.8L diesel up till
about 1985.
Both Nissan and Toyota had diesels (2.2L/2.4L)in their
trucks and Nissan even had a 6 cyl diesel in the 810.

Probably any of these can be found cheap but will they
turn your generator???
