Classic symptom of a leaking check valve on the fuel pump. You need a
proper high pressure (approx 90 psi) guage plumbed into the fuel
system. Crank/run engine to activate fuel pump and then turn it off. If
I recall correctly pressure should still be in the 80 psi range after
ten minutes. If not, it's either the accumulator or check valve, most
likely the valve. You probably don't want to just throw parts at this
because the check valve is located on the top of the pump, inside and
on the bottom of the fuel tank. It's an ugly job to remove and
reinstall the pump just to change out the $20 or so check valve but
that's how it goes. BTDT
There's some really good info to be found at
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/ficis.html. If I ever
get a chance to meet Scott Mockry I swear I'll kiss him. If it wasn't
for him and the list I'd have never got my first Audi running well
enough to get hooked. Then again, that could have been a bad thing.
