There are two things that make solving this one tough - one is that it
appears to be intermittent, making it much harder to measure things when
it is "bad." The other is the sheer number of things "gone bad" that
could do this. Well, maybe not so many as later cars, but still.
Could be -
fuel pump relay (overheating and) breaking contact
intermittent power to ignition module, bad ign. module
bad connection at hall sender or dying hall sender
bad frequency valve, clogging warm up reg messing with fuel delivery
bad connection in wiring to fuel pump
dying fuel pump
short in one of the fpr dependent circuits (though this would turn up as
a release of smoke and/or blown fuse) - check the auziliary air valve
and warm up reg circuits
perhaps, bad grounds at intake manifold
perhaps, *really* old cap/rotor or wires.
dying coil
etc.
So you see, this is going to take elimination and testing, and if the
bad part is very intermittent, it's going to be hard. Swapping in known
good parts can be informative, if you have them, but randomly replacing
things can get expensive and is poor procedure (unless you're replacing
things that are due anyway, like ignition components).
Good luck figuring it out!
