Distributor dis-assembly to get at the hall sensor...

Audi has a cute special 3 armed puller to remove the
shutter wheel. It is a tight fit but nothing other
than friction and the circlip hold it on. I have used
2 flat blade screwdrivers on opposing side of the
shutter wheel levered against the edge of the
distributor housing. 4cyl versions you can be directly
opposite by 5 cyl versions you have to be staggered
some. You have to pry against the inner part as close
to the center as possible to reduce the chance of
bending the sheet metal the shutter wheel is made of.
You can't pry on the outer edge it bend easily. There
are some engines (do recall which) that only have a
single opening in the shutter wheel and I have never
had to remove one of them. Watch out for where the pin
goes to, even if you have a replacement. You don't
want it bouncing around inside your distributor.
After replacing the hall unit, I always pushed the
shutter wheel back on then lined up the slots for the
pin and tapped the pin in with a small punch and
hammer.
The shutter wheels use to be available as replacement
parts but I don't know if they are anymore. I used to
get a hall unit kit with both 4cyl & 5cyl shutter
wheels, the plastic connector housing for the outside
of the distributor, spare locating pin for the shutter
wheel and some spare screws for less than half what
Audi wanted for just the hall unit.
Good Luck
