The air suspension is pretty slow- it takes probably at least
a minute to go from full down to full up.

Are you talking about the piece that locks the whole cargo contraption
into the side of the car? I'd imagine you have to buy the whole thing to
fix that. Maybe you can find a good used one- they're the same IIRC, from
'99 to '05 A6 and allroads.
