My boss' newly aquired urS4 is driving he and I batty with a front end
clunk. It's very intermittent, usually happening when the steering is
near or on the lock (either direction) but not easily reproducable. It
sounds like the right side.
I have just replaced both the control arm and tie rod end on the
passenger side and the clunk did not change. It's a loud clunk, and
also can be felt in the floor board.
I used a multi-input chassic listening device with an input on the
upper strut nut, the subframe near the control arm bushing, the tie
rod and the end of the sway bar (the threaded portion). The clunk was
audible only through the input clipped to the sub frame near the
control arm bushing.
I can't get anything to move out of the ordinary using a pry bar. The
subframe only moves with the bushings, it doesn't seem to move vs. the
chassis with the pry bar. I marked the sub frame with the intention of
seeing if it moves vs the body while driving, but haven't been able to
check on that quite yet.
My internet at home is down for a few days, so don't expect any
replies with more info until lunchtime tomorrow :-(.
Any ideas / BTDT?
