NG with blown head gasket...how long can it run like that?

David,
Some very adventure-some folks out there per some of the responses!
Consider the consequences if car does indeed fail somewhere along the way:
1. Will car have to be towed off the road if broken down... $?
2. Will you have to then pay storage, or just turn car over with title to be
crushed? Maybe $?
3. What will it cost for you to get back home? Hitch hiking is always a
option, but a little iffy! Probably $!
4. Also keep in mind that southerners aren't always so helpful to us
Yankees.... (In general, but there's always exceptions!)
Head gasket and labor price may be cheaper than above scenarios!
Running temps probably not a issue in the NE and part ways down south..
Further south you get the warmer it will be... I've run with heat on full,
even with windows down it's pretty miserable! Not sure what thermostat the
80 calls for, but it's probably the 87c. I'd put the 80c in if you were
thinking of attempting this. At least the thermostat will allow it to run
cooler until pressure or leaks raise running temps....
And, finally, is the car even road worthy?
With age comes wisdom, BTDT's and memories of bad experiences! (I'm somewhat
of a pessimist, can you tell?) There's always a story in the end, and
they're usually funny, but normally not so humoourous when you're in the
midst...
(Hmm, driving from Italy to Germany... Going through the Alps, driver puts
gas in a diesel car! Breakdown vicinity of Balzano, leave the car at shop,
wait six hours outside at train station, get 2am train to Munich.. Sleep
terribly, and cold, on the floor of the train for three hours... hilarious
now, not so funny then!)
So, bottom line is, I wouldn't! Would it make it? Maybe....
Eric
