FWIW, I found the best way to remove the speedo needle was to hold the shaft
with some needle-nosed pliers while I carefully twisted-and-pulled the
needle off.

By the way, this is not a trivial repair, you have to pull the speedo 
needle and play with tiny screws, after getting the gauges out of the 
car.  I'll document it on my web site as well, when all is done.
