1987 tq clutch pedal drops

The intermittent nature of this behavior usually means the master and slave cylinders are failing.  Don't know how your mechanic can assure that those pieces still are good, but the clutch system DOES also use an over-center spring to help in the return of the pedal to normal position and it's possible there is some problem with that part of the assembly.
