I'm no expert either, but had recent experience with a 2.8 where suddenly on start up the water pump started making a lot of racket (no previous symptoms). It had that serious tone to it so we towed the car and had the pump/belt service done. The wrench said if we had driven it as much as 10 miles we more than likely would have been buying a motor. The pump was that close to taking the out the belt.
This was with no leaks or previous noises etc. Whether it is the pump or the belt that fails, the resulting carnage is _expensive_!!
There is a lot of headache and wallet/braindamage at stake in these decisions.

I dont know. I have relatively little experience.

but my thinking is that the water pump is a bushing. A supposedly
close-tolerance water tight bushing.

When it leaks, it is losing its tolerance/ When it is losing its
tolerance it is more likely to fail.

QED.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
