I agree with you both, that's why I said we had a "debate" about that. Both
systems are great, albeit in different ranges.
MPG is great to express high numbers (fuel efficient cars) and is directly
related to " bigger is better ". But USA is not a country with a majority of
30 mpg vehicles...
Metric's L/100km is great for gas guzzlers but show its weakness when the
numbers are low : one cannot easily see the benefits to trade a 5 liter old
car for a 4 liter new car, even if it's a 20% improvement.
That's why I think a $/year standardized figure could do a better job to
express the gains to switch for a fuel efficient vehicle.

number is better. That works well for Americans.
