Do you have climate control in your cars? The connection is for temp sensor,
which shows up in AC diagnostic mode. And it is different from gauge sensor ,
despite electrical diagrams showing wires going from the same multifunction
sensor to gauge and AC head.
I suppose it is for more accurate opening during the cold weather. While
engine is heating up, it stays closed. When the temp sensor triggers, the
valve is opened. If the sensor is more close to the heater, it gives better
reading. But I always wondered why the sensor is located after the valve, not
before :)
