Hawk Brakes actually recommends "burnishing" rotors if you are switching pad
compounds in their installation instructions (and website). They actually
recommend 200 grit sandpaper (I use a block) to clean off the previous pad
deposits. Then, you are to do the bedding procedure. I'm guessing Hawk isn't
too concerned about silica deposits. FWIW, I did this on the Saabaru
switching from EBC Yellows to Hawk HP+, standard Brembo rotors. They
haven't been all that squeaky until about 8K miles and some 18 autocross
runs after install.
