I worried about this too. But careful sanding, as i described:
1. removed pad deposits that other methods had not
2. removed a lip that was preventing pad seating
(note: i also went around that lip with a screwdriver, knocking
it off)
So the point is, it can work. I agree you can also make matters
worse. I suggest trying it.
