Guys,

I have a broken speedo cable in the Golf and need some BTDT on fixing it.

Some background:

The car is a 1987 Golf GTI 8V with an ADY 2 litre tall block engine and has
a 93 passat TD gearbox in it (type 02A (cable change) code CHA) i am due to
put my CTM 02J gearbox back in the car in a week or so, once the Quaife has
been fitted.

The car uses the original Golf 2 clocks and is Right Hand Drive. I have been
using RHD Golf 2 1.3litre speedo cables to make the set up work. Since the
1.3 never made it to North America and everything is LHD (Wrong Hand Drive)
"over here" you can all imagine how easy it is to find said part in
Montreal.......... L

I have ordered one from my old supplier near Wrecsam in the UK but i expect
it to take up to 3 weeks to arrive by snail mail. I could just live with no
speedo for the time being, but was wondering if you lot had any experience
fixing speedo cables.

The cable has sheared at the gearbox end right at the point where the flexy
springy bit joins the solid end piece with the square drive that fits in the
drive gear take off.

Since it's the "wrong" part, then it could stand being shortened by a few
inches, so there is room to play.

I had assumed that i would drill out the solid end and re-insert the flexy
springy bit, then solder it in place.

Anyone got a better idea? Or experience that clearly demonstrates that this
is an exercise in futility?

Geraint
